The Pherolist

Witzgall P, Lindblom T, Bengtsson M, Tóth M (2004) The Pherolist. www-pherolist.slu.se

The pherolist is a database of chemicals identified from sex pheromone glands of female Lepidopteran insects and other chemicals attractive to male moths. The maintenance of this website is powered by MISTRA and the IOBC Working Group "Pheromones and Other Semiochemicals in Integrated Production"

Pheromones

Pheromones are chemicals emitted by living organisms to send messages to individuals of the same species. Insect pheromones offer a unique chance to study the principles of odour communication. Pheromones are also used to control insects by disrupting their mate finding behaviour, instead of spraying poisonous insecticides. Read more about pheromones.

Past, Presence and Future

This database was first published by Heinrich Arn, Ernst Priesner and Miklós Tóth in 1986 as the book: "List of Sex Pheromones of Lepidoptera and Related Attractants". Heinrich Arn created the original web version in 1995, which was last updated in September 2000. It is still available at http://www.stud.slu.se/~h7toblin/oldpherolist

Since January 2004, the Pherolist is being continued by Peter Witzgall, Tobias Lindblom, Marie Bengtsson, and Miklos Tóth. Future versions will also contain pheromones of other insect orders.

Updates

The Pherolist will never be complete again, but an effort is made to update the list stepwise. The following journals have been included since the last version by Arn et al. (2000):
  • Entomologia experimentalis et applicata - Vol 109(3), 2003
  • Journal of chemical Ecology - Vol 29(12), 2003
